Reddit answers has been launched by reddit which is similar to Google AI overview but in the form of Reddit. With it users will be able to asks questions and get AI generated replies with information being sourced from related subreddits.
With help of Reddit Answers, people will be able to ask questions and receive answers with the help of new AI powered conversational interface. Curated summaries of relevant conversations and details across Reddit would appear which would include links to related posts and communities. They can easily read relevant snippets and answers inline from real redditors, jump into conversations and search deep with their own or suggested follow-up questions.
It would only be of use to Reddit users which are as of now less than 100 million so it would not affect Google Search dominance but at the same time it would also benefit Google from human generated product insights in its result on Reddit because of its data sharing deal with the company.
This would make Reddit more of focus for discovery for more people. It has become a valuable source in current gen AI race as its forums see actual human sharing loads of practical real world insights into experiences with many of them with products. It has grabbed the attention of AI developers who required human insight for enhancing value of generative AI answers.
In February this year, Google had signed a deal with Reddit for data sharing which is now being used by Google in various ways which includes within its Gemini chatbot. It is working to offer the same experience which other apps are with its data within Reddit itself. Reddit has also gone ahead and launched AI Answers in India and the biggest reason behind this is the increase in penetration of smartphones, thanks to its massive population and increasing thirst for credible information by the people. It is aimed at users who are looking for credible information on different topics ranging from travel to career. Reddit is looking at India as an incredible growth market where AI would be able to lead to fresh engagement.
It wants to improve accessibility for users by introduction of AI powered translation tools which means users would be able to translate threads and posts from English to Hindi and vice versa. This step is part of partnership where Reddit is getting integrated into Gemini AI model of Google with an aim to make it more structured and AI powered platform. It is not just looking to compete with ChatGPT or Google but looking to reinvent as a reliable place for finding human center and experience led response.
Take for example, users asking suggestions for making mind sharper and Reddit Answers will end up providing bespoke information on top recommendations from other users on the platform along with it. It would be giving brief snippets about each and every answer with link to original post along with list of communities for finding related information. Reddit provides multiple prompts and queries on top of the search bar. It also provides related query suggestions after the answers have been provided to the users.
Currently users can end up asking ten questions per week and logged in users will be able to ask twenty questions per day and premium subscribers can ask up to hundred questions per day.
Nowadays every company seems to be using AI in their products to stand out from the rest of the crowd.
It would be really interesting to figure out whether it impacts how other platforms are looking to deal with Reddit on its data offerings.
